THE DUNN WAS A THREE MAST SCHOONER BUILT IN 1884 AT THOMASTON, MAINE IN THE SHIPYARD OF DUNN AND ELLIOTT.

THE DUNN DEPARTED NEW YORK CITY FOR CHARLESTON, SC ON MAY 23, 1918. WHEN TWO DAYS OUT SHE WAS SOUTH OF THE WINTER QUARTER LIGHTSHIP OFF THE EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA WHEN A SUBMARINE SURFACED AND FIRED A SHOT ACROSS HER BOW. CAPTAIN HOLROOK BROUGHT THE DUNN TO A STOP AND SHE WAS BOARDED BY THE GERMANS. WITHIN TEN MINUTES A TNT CHARGE SENT THE DUNN TO THE BOTTOM. THE CREW WAS LEFT IN THE LIFEBOAT WHILE THE U-151 CHASED DOWN AND SANK A SECOND SCHOONER. THE U BOAT TOOK BOTH CREWS ON BOARD AND LATER THAT DAY SUNK A THIRD SCHOONER. OVER THE NEXT FIVE DAYS THE SUB CREW LAID MINES OFF THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE BAYS, CUT TWO TRANS-ATLANTIC CABLES OFF FIRE ISLAND AND SANK TWO MORE SHIPS. THE GERMANS HAD CAPTURED 48 SEAMAN AND AT ONE POINT HAD RUN AGROUND NEAR THE OVERFALL LIGHTSHIP. ON MAY 28TH THE PRISONERS WERE SET ADRIFT IN LIFEBOATS AND THEY WERE PICKED UP BY A STEAMER 25 MILES OFF BARNEGAT INLET, NEW JERSEY. WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE WRECK OF THE HATTIE DUNN WAS FOUND IN 1997 IN 110 FEET OF WATER 40 MILES NORTHEAST OF VIRGINIA BEACH.
