BRITISH ADMIRALITY CHART OF THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN

BASED ON PATRICK O’BRIAN’S FIRST NOVEL, MASTER AND COMMANDER THE BRIG HMS SOPHIE WAS JACK AUBREY’S FIRST COMMAND. O’BRIAN MODELED THE SOPHIE AND HER OPERATIONS AFTER THE REAL ROYAL NAVY SHIP HMS SPEEDY, WHICH WAS LAUNCHED IN 1782 AND CARRIED A CREW OF 90 AND WAS ARMED WITH 14 FOUR POUND LONG GUNS AND 12 SWIVEL GUNS. BOTH THE REAL SPEEDY AND THE FICTIONAL SOPHIE OPERATED IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN FROM PORT MAHON AND BOTH WERE CAPTURED BY A FRENCH FLEET OFF THE COAST OF SPAIN.
