THE EL RUBI WAS THE FLAGSHIP OF THE 1733 TREASURE FLEET OF 21 SHIPS, WHICH LEFT HAVANA ON JULY 13TH BOUND FOR SPAIN. ONE DAY OUT. WHILE PASSING THE FLORIDA KEYS THEY SENSED A HURRICANE WAS COMING AND TURNED BACK TO HAVANA. BUT DURING THE NIGHT ALL OF THE SHIPS WERE SCATTER AND SUNK ALONG THE FLORIDA KEYS. THE SPANISH MOUNTED A MASSIVE SALVAGE EFFORT AND RECOVERED MUCH OF THE LOST “TREASURE”. THE EL RUBI CARRIED OVER 2,000 BOXES OF GOLD AND SILVER COINS AS WELL AS COPPER, VANILLA, INDIGO, CHOCOLATE AND TOBACCO. THE WRECK OF THE SHIP WAS REDISCOVERD IN 1938 NEAR TAVERNIER KEY BY ART MCKEE. WHILE NO MASSIVE TREASURE WAS FOUND FROM ANY OF THE WRECKS, MCKEE REALIZIED THEIR HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE AND ESTABLISHED THE FIRST MUSEUM DEVOTED TO SPANISH SHIPWRECKS.
